Instrumental Systems is a small engineering firm located in Sheridan, WY. While we specialize in the electrical and process engineering tasks that arise in the upstream oil and gas industry, other projects are focused on distributed generation, prototyping and product development, data gathering and presentation, microturbine integration and efficiency studies.

We are just as comfortable in the field trouble-shooting gas compressors as we are sitting in the office programming microcontrollers.

Capabilities

Oil Field Electrification

Instrumental Systems currently works with an oil producer that recently purchased an oil field with 15 producing wells that were scattered over several sections without access to electric power. Instrumental Systems is working with the operator and REA to design and implement a single phase power distribution system that will reduce the production costs as well as increase efficiency without the cost and impact of a typical industrial scale three phase power system installation. Instrumental Systems will design and build well head speed reducers (jack shafts) to better match the pumping equipment and current pumping needs, the motors and provide VFDs. This typical project is one Instrumental Systems has completed several times.

Injection Facility and Area Controls

Instrumental Systems is working with an oil producer to provide instrumentation design for a water re-injection facility. The project includes monitoring and coordinating remote oil well production with available volume in produced water and oil tanks, as well as disposal pump and well availability. Information is processed with a PLC and is optimized to maximize production and minimize power consumption and harm to machinery. This system also enforces well-head pressure requirements set in the permit and mechanical stresses caused by pressure transients.

High Resolution Digital Field Permeameter

Instrumental Systems prototyping and electronics design expertise led to a request to design and build several High Resolution Digital Field Permeameters. These automated Permeameters gather data that allow some soil characteristics to be characterized at a resolution rarely before seen. The design and constructions involved researching existing technology and determining the best way to provide the client with the data they requested. Data validation and presentation proved to be an important part of the project.

Mud Motor Rotor Polisher

Instrumental Systems was approached and asked to design and build a machine that polishes mud motor rotors that have been taken out of service due to ware and re-plated with chrome. The project required Instrumental Systems to build an automated machine able to process rotors up to 18’ in length and polish the complex curves to 5 RMA or less.

Submersible Oil Well Pump Development

Instrumental systems is currently working with LORENTZ, a leading solar water well pump manufacturer, to help develop pumps capable of pumping oil from depths near 3000'. Our primary role is to develop and test ancillary electronics and mechanical devices needed for successful operation and meet Oil and Gas industry expectations.

Wyoming CBM Wells

WY_CBM_Wells.kml - Provides an active link to publicly available CBM well information gathered by the Wyoming Oil and Gas Conservation Comission. Because of the more than 40,000 wells, no wells will show up unless the viewing elevation is within ~15 miles above the earth's surface. The different colors represent different operators, different shapes are for different types of leases. Clicking on a well will show more information. A good place to start is where the Powder River intersects I-90: PR-interstate. Last update 04-09-10.

Wyoming Oil Wells

WY_Oil_Wells.kml - Provides an active link to publicly available Oil well information gathered by the Wyoming Oil and Gas Conservation Comission. Because of the more than 16,000 wells, no wells will show up unless the viewing elevation is within ~15 miles above the earth's surface. The different colors represent different operators, different shapes are for different types of leases. Clicking on a well will show more information. Last update 10-07-11.

Nebraska Wells

NE_Wells.kml - Works just like the previous section but contains information about wells in Nebraska.

Power Lines - PreCorp

PowerLines.kml - Provides an active link to Northeast Wyoming power lines owned by Powder River Energy Corporation. Light blue lines are underground, dark blue is overhead 3-phase and red is single phase overhead. More information about the lines can be found by clicking the folder in the Places section on the left side of the GE screen.
